BE RESILIENT

May 5, 2022 Although I’m not fluent in Español, I do know what Cinco de Mayo represents. On a good day, it represents margaritas, veggie burritos and guacamole. 😋 However, it is also the day I received horrible news. I had just made it home after seeing the Mighty O’Jays in concert when I received a call from one of my friends. She told me that one of my friends had passed away. I was saddened and in disbelief. As if his passing wasn’t hard enough to process, I found out he took his own life. 😞 I kept thinking, “How did this happen? How could he do this to… Read More

FINDING ME

Photo Credit: The book cover of Viola Davis’ memoir, Finding Me (Amazon.com)   April 27. 2022 As a child, I was not that girl who loved reading books. It wasn’t my thing. I was more into television. I loved watching Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers and The Electric Company. That is how I was able to continue learning outside of school. However, during my teen years, there was a cute guy who worked at the neighborhood library. All of a sudden, I wanted to spend my free time there just to look at him. It wasn’t just me, though. All the young girls in the neighborhood would come to see him… Read More

BE A DREAMER

April 7, 2022 “You may never know what results come from your action. But if you do nothing, there will be no results.” — Ghandi Years ago, I was able to cross off a bucket list item. I was able to meet Oprah! Meeting her was one of the 27 experiences that I had written down for myself. Oprah was doing “The Life You Want” tour which was a weekend workshop with herself and some of her top thought leaders. I knew if I wanted to meet Oprah, I needed to be where she was. Instead of just attending the workshop, I chose to participate in the VIP experience. Being… Read More

WE DON’T TALK ABOUT BRUNO, NO, NO, NO

March 28, 2022 Yesterday, after going to see Pretty Woman, the Musical, I hurried home to catch the Oscars. I was excited to see how the awards show was being reimagined by a Black producer and all Black production team. Also, I was excited to see the electrifying performance of the hit song from Disney’s Encanto, “We don’t talk about Bruno.” Unfortunately, we still don’t talk about Bruno, no, no, no because all the Oscar conversations revolves around “the slap seen all around the world.” I am not here today to give my thoughts about the incident. However, I do want to talk about something that came to mind, the… Read More

BE COURAGEOUS

“I’m afraid there’s no denyin, I’m just a Dandy-Lion, a fate I don’t deserve! But I could show my prowess, be a Lion, not a mouse…if I only had the Nerve! ― Cowardly Lion (1939) Prior to the pandemic, I used to travel all the time. It was one of my favorite pastimes. Oh, how I miss thee! Fortunately, I have a great imagination. Since the mind doesn’t know the difference between what’s real and what’s imagined, I have “traveled” to a different island every week. Also, in to make it a more enjoyable travel experience, I’ll look at some of my pictures to help me imagine what it’s like.… Read More

BE GRATEFUL

February 23, 2022 “Coincidence is God’s way of remaining anonymous.” – Albert Einstein The other day, I ran across this phone and was reminded how there are no coincidences. I talked about this in my book, The Beautiful Journey: Finding Purpose Through Cancer. Here’s an excerpt: “Not too long ago, I was at a professional conference in Atlanta. I met up with a former executive from my company. I needed some advice about my career and the direction it was heading. This is someone whom I hold in high regard. She is an amazing individual and I can’t wait until she decides to write her book. Her story is remarkable, powerful,… Read More

Be Persistent

February 9, 2022 per·sist·ence /pərˈsistəns/ noun * 1. firm or obstinate continuance in a course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition A few years ago, I had created my “bucket list” by writing down 27 experiences I wanted for myself. I spent a lot of time and energy being intentional by selecting items that were aligned with my vision. The beautiful thing about my “bucket list” is that none of the items are easy to do. Each one of them requires me to stretch, grow and rely on a Higher Power. Fortunately, on my last vacation, I was able to cross off one of my “bucket list” items.… Read More

I MISSED GROUNDHOG DAY…BUT NOT THE MESSAGE

February 3, 2022 Every year, I look forward to Groundhog Day because this is when we find out if we’re going to have six more weeks of winter or an early spring. On February 2nd, we wait for the groundhog to let us know our fate. Unfortunately, Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog, saw his shadow yesterday, which means we’ll have six more weeks of winter. 😒 I can’t even tell you how accurate Phil’s predictions are, but still, it’s all in good fun. During this time, I can’t help but think about the 1993 movie, Groundhog Day. Have you seen it? In the movie, Bill Murray portrays Phil Connors, a cynical… Read More

0:13 (THIRTEEN SECONDS)

January 24, 2022 OOOOOOWWWWWEEEE! What a weekend for football fans… Ever since I was young, I’ve been a HUGE football fan. I would spend all day Sunday, Monday nights and even Thursday nights watching professional football. I’m not much into college football. Probably because I went to a Division III school and our team wasn’t that great. However, over the past few years, I haven’t watched the NFL as much as I used to. Partly because I still stand with Colin Kaepernick but also, because chemotherapy changed my brain. I’m not exactly sure what happened and why it affected my ability to watch football, but it did. It’s difficult to… Read More

TO RESOLVE OR NOT TO RESOLVE

“May the New Year bring you courage to break your resolutions early! My own plan is to swear off every kind of virtue, so that I triumph even when I fall!” ― Aleister Crowley TO RESOLVE OR NOT TO RESOLVE? That is the question. Well, not really. I do not make new year’s resolutions anymore. I’ve learned from the past, making resolutions is a setup for disappointment and heartbreak if I don’t achieve them. Well, not really, but kind of. I find myself feeling like a failure and beating up on myself if I don’t do the things that I resolve. Therefore, for me, not making resolutions is a form… Read More
